When you're in an upsetting situation, your body has two options: React or Respond.

To react is to act involuntarily, maybe through snapping, yelling or freezing up. Responding, by contrast, is thoughtful—the result of a conscious evaluation and decision on what to do next.

Learning to respond, rather than react, is critical for women in every stage and area of life.

If you're here, you're likely already on your healing journey. You're "doing the work," so to speak, and you understand how important it is to stay calm in a triggering moment.

This understanding of what we "should" do makes it all the more frustrating to not feel in control of our bodies when we're triggered.

Trust me when I say that I've been there.

That's why I've created The Healing Village Lite, an 8-module self-paced course designed to help folx on their healing journey get unstuck by learning and applying 7 essential elements that are key in the trauma healing journey.

When you join me in The Healing Village Lite, you'll learn to:

  • Increase your awareness about different factors that are contributing to activating your survival response, including ancestral trauma, inner children wounds, guilt/shame patterns, anger and relationship triggers;
  • Learn effective and simple regulation skills,
  • Recognize your patterns, both individual and ancestral, and
  • Consciously respond to upsetting or triggering events in a way you feel proud of.

I want to share with you a poem called “There’s A Hole In My Sidewalk.” Written by Portia Nelson in 1977, I think of it often as I work with clients in my private practice.

“I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost... I am helpless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in the same place.
But, it isn't my fault.
It still takes me a long time to get out.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in. It's a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault. I get out immediately.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
I walk down another street.”

This poem, in my eyes, perfectly articulates what so many of us experience while just trying to go about our daily life.

We wake up, drink our coffee and head out the front door. The sun is shining. Our neighbors are waving hello. All signs point to it being a beautiful day.

Then suddenly, completely out of nowhere, we fall. Hard.

Down into a deep hole in the sidewalk.

Maybe your spouse critiques you, or your boss makes a snide comment at work. Maybe an experience with your child triggers a slew of memories you thought were long forgotten.

Whatever it is, you fall.

As you tumble, you become overwhelmed with emotions. You wonder, Why is this happening? Your heart rate raises. You begin to feel hot.

As we fall, some of us will snap and say things we regret. As our mouth opens to utter the (usually unkind) words, our mind wonders: What am I even saying?

At other times, we may feel totally paralyzed. We’ll sit, stunned, unable to say anything at all.

(Then, of course, we’ll spend the next 12 hours considering what would have happened if we’d said any of the things now playing on repeat inside our head.)

Of course, there are times that we should snap and other times we should stay quiet.

But here’s a secret: Your empowerment won’t come from saying the right thing at the right time in exactly the right way.

Your empowerment comes from your ability to respond, rather than react, to the inevitable trauma of life.

When you respond to triggers from a conscious place (meaning you’ve had an internal conversation first), you think more clearly and make better decisions.

When you learn to recognize the signs, regulate your body, and release shame and guilt for your emotions, you eventually find hope. You begin to realize that things can actually change. You empower yourself to move forward, away from patterns—both personal and ancestral—that are no longer serving you.

And, maybe most importantly, you become confident in the person you are when you’re truly just being yourself.

You walk down another street.

I created The Healing Village Lite in response to hearing so many of my clients, coworkers and friends express frustration with their healing journey.

Over my decade of work in psychology, I've noticed a tendency to want to heal trauma quickly, often through repeated exposure to the triggering event.

Honestly, I even experienced it myself. I remember sitting in therapy thinking: Let me just heal and get this over with. Every second spent “healing” in stillness felt like a moment wasted.

As a Latinx woman, I am all too familiar with the “grind” or “hustle” of life. For years I thought that life would always feel like a non-stop marathon. That I had no other choice.

It was only after I gave birth to my son that I began to settle. I’d hear people say things like “You need to regulate,” or “You need to ground yourself,” and I had no idea what that process even looked like.

As I opened up to friends and family, I realized this happens to so many of us—especially women of color, who are often forced to confront trauma and adversity from every direction there is.

When our bodies are stuck in survival mode, of course it doesn’t feel like there’s any time to sit, process and think about how to respond to a negative event. When you’re hustling, life is all fight or flight, snap or freeze. By the time we’ve fallen down the hole, it’s way too late to take another street.

My goal in The Healing Village Lite is to give you simple tools and strategies to increase your awareness and regulation skills—to help you recognize your patterns, both individual and ancestral, and consciously respond to life’s inevitable trauma.

The Healing Village Lite was not designed to overwhelm or uproot your life. I also can’t promise that you’ll never snap or freeze again. (You are human, after all.)

I can promise, however, that when you register for The Healing Village Lite you will become more aware of yourself. You’ll learn to regulate your emotional responses, a critical skill that will impact every relationship and major decision in your life.

You’ll learn to live with yourself, all of yourself, and be who you truly are. When things need to change, you’ll know how to change them.

Because yes, things can change. Life doesn’t have to feel like a race with no finish line. But change doesn’t happen overnight. It happens in all of the small moments, the thousands of everyday decisions that seem to happen on autopilot.

Join me in The Healing Village Lite and take back the life you deserve.

Ashley R.

I attended an Inner Child workshop with Lydiana. Lydiana really understands that everyone works differently and provided different ways "in": tactile, aural, visual, emotional.

Her expertise of having her done her own Inner Child work made me feel safe and secure to share my thoughts with the group, which was compulsory and not required!

I still have a little token from a gift she gave us at the workshop—a ribbon wrapped around the notebook we used to write to our inner children. The personal touches Lydiana added—a note at the beginning of the notebook or even direct eye contact—made this group experience feel personal.

Dr. Rocío Rosales Meza

One of the things that I appreciate about Dr. Lydiana is that she shares ways to cope with trauma in a tangible, real way. She not only writes about these things but shows you how to do them, and that is very important. Dr. Lydiana is also caring, friendly, and committed to helping the community. I appreciate her and her work.
